Directions For Use
READ ALL DIRECTIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE STARTING.
BEFORE USING THE STAINER-BASE COAT OR GRAINER, OPEN THE BOTTLE AND BREAK OR REMOVE THE HEAT SEAL.
A. Preparation
1) Masking: Mask any areas not being coated with plastic and masking tape. Remove any hardware and knobs that you don’t want finished.
2) Sealed or Painted Surfaces: Back To Nature Real Wood should be applied to a clean, dry surface free from wax, grease, dirt, or other surface contaminants.
3) New Surface: Real Wood should also be applied to a clean dry surface free from contaminants.
i) Raw Wood – Before the application of the Real Wood products, seal the surface with a coat of a quality wood sealer or a shellac.
ii) Bare Metal – Before application of Real Wood, prime bare metal with a quality metal primer.
B. Application
1) Do not thin Stainer-Base Coat or Grainer or apply either product below 45º F.
2) Stir Stainer-Base Coat with mixing stick. Do Not Shake Container. Dip applicator brush in Stainer-Base Coat. Brush on Stainer-Base Coat and allow to dry to the touch. The Stainer-Base Coat typically dries to the touch in two hours*. You may not get complete hiding of the original surface color with one application of the Stainer-Base Coat. Depending upon the color of the original item and the Real Wood stain color chosen, additional applications might be necessary. This is especially true when you are applying a darker Stainer-Base Coat (Dark Walnut or Red Mahogany) over a light color, or when you are applying a lighter Stainer-Base Coat (Golden Oak or Antique White), over a dark colored surface. Let the first application dry to the touch before your second application. Over a smooth sealed surface, 16 oz. of the Stainer-Base Coat will cover approximately 30 sq. ft. If you need more than one application of the Stainer-Base Coat, coverage will decrease accordingly. The application of the Stainer-Base Coat will make your surface start to look like a wood surface. However, it is not until the application of the Grainer that the full wood grain effect will become apparent.
3) When the Stainer-Base Coat is dry to the touch, stir the Grainer with mixing stick. Pour a small amount of the Grainer into the supplied tray. Lightly dab the Euro-Grain Applicator to pick up a small amount of the Grainer and squeeze off excess on the side of the tray. Lightly drag the Euro-Grain Applicator in ONE DIRECTION along the surface to be grained. This will give the surface a grainy look. The Grainer stays wet on the surface, allowing you to create the grain look you want by varying the amount of strokes on the surface. A number of light strokes on the surface is preferable to a heavy handed application. The Grainer coat typically dries to the touch in one hour*. If you should desire a deeper grain look, after the initial application of the Grainer is dry to the touch, apply a second grain coat.
4) When using the Euro-Grain Applicator with the Grainer to create a grain effect, the grain should run parallel with the longer dimension of the surface being refinished. The following illustration will give you an example on how you should apply the Grainer to the surface. Use of masking tape may be helpful. Section off areas of your item so you may grain in the right direction.
5) Cleaning the tools: Clean the applicator brush and Euro-Grain Applicator immediately after use in clean water, then rinse out under warm water from the tap.
Do not allow the Grainer to harden on the Euro-Grain Applicator.
6) The Real Wood products are fully cured in 24-48 hours*. The item should not be used until the product is fully cured.
*Certain factors such as temperature, humidity and ventilation present could vary drying time.
