During this time of year I think many people wonder what Christmas is all about? Why do we really celebrate this time of year? Is it a time for good will or doing things for others? Or a time to be greedy and selfish?
Many people know it started with the birth of Jesus but don’t know much beyond that. But what most people don’t know is it really started many, many years before that. When God first decided to make man. In Genesis 1:27 it says: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him: male and female created He them.”
God placed these two people in the garden of Eden to tend to it (at that point there were no weeds because there was no sin there) and to have fellowship with him. God would come to them and walk with them. The only rule He gave them was they could not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But Satan tempted Eve and she ate and then gave to Adam who also ate of that tree and that was the first sin. From that point on they were no longer in the garden and weeds and hard work became the way of life.
But even before God made man He knew man would sin and He was already planning a way of salvation. You see God can not tolerate sin because He is perfect and He needed someone to pay the debt for our sin. Long before Jesus came to earth it was predicted in the Old Testament that a Savior was coming, where He would be born, and even his ministry on earth. So you see God planned all along that He would send His Son to be the perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world.
God sent Jesus through extraordinary circumstances (a virgin birth) to be OUR sin sacrifice. We celebrate Christmas because it was the beginning of the journey to our salvation. Thirty three years later Jesus willingly was killed to be our sin sacrifice on a cruel cross and rose three days later to show that He had won the victory over sin.
I think some people now think that God sent Jesus to condemn us but He really sent Him to save us. He wants us to have a relationship with Him and the only thing we have to do is accept His FREE gift. You know if you don’t except a gift you can never enjoy it so if you want to enjoy eternal life you have to accept the gift God is offering you. In I John 1:8 it states: “ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” In Romans 3:23 it states: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
In Romans 6:23 it states: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” So in I John 1:9 it states: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
So right now all you have to do is confess your sins to God and really believe Jesus was sent to be your Savior from your sins and accept that free gift of eternal life He is offering you will be saved from your sins and can begin having that special relationship with God.
