The Little Big Markets are a great family day out. They showcase both local and national talent. These markets are held once a week in Mount Maunganui and they’re always changing! 2: The KatiKati Bird Gardens
The KatiKati bird gardens are a great activity for the whole family. They’re located in rural KatiKati. The gardens are a paradise for animal lovers and nature lovers. 3: Orokawa Bay
Orokawa Bay, a local secret beach, is just a few steps away from Waihi Beach. Orokawa Bay is only accessible by footpath and lined with sparkling white sands and ancient pohutukawa. Orokawa Bay offers fishing, surfing and walking trails. Take some time to admire Waihi Beach, a beautiful seaside village on the way to Orokawa. The Redwoods is an adventurers’ dream. A stunning forest rich in emotion and history, it’s a beautiful place to explore. The Redwoods are perfect for walking, horseback riding and mountain biking. 6: The Falls Retreat
As you travel through the Karangahake Gorge, you will be greeted by delicious food, stunning scenery and friendly faces as you enter the grounds of the restaurant. You’ll be surrounded by stunning landscapes and decor, whether you are seated indoors or outdoors. The best way to enjoy a drink on the lawn is with a delicious wood-fired pie and a fresh salad. 7: Dickey Flat
Dickey’s Flat, a DOC campground located by the Waitawheta River is an incredible spectacle. A 35-site campsite is located at the end of a dirt road. Get your hiking shoes on and start exploring! You will walk over swing bridges through dark caves past mining relics to untouched swimming areas! There’s nothing like a refreshing swim in fresh water to cool down after a long walk, or a leap from the highest ledge for a good workout! Spend as much time as possible exploring Dickey’s flat and the surrounding area. These beautiful areas of our planet have so much to give. To get to Dickey’s, follow the directions here. 8: Copenhagen Cones
Copenhagen Cones’ waffle cones are a must-have for anyone who has conquered Mount Maunganui. The delicious aroma will make you salivate even before you reach the storefront! Copenhagen’s offers a variety of ice cream flavours, frozen yogurt and shakes. Stay up-to-date with everything!
9: The Pizza Library CO. & Vaudeville Bar
The Pizza Library CO. & Vaudeville Bar, both located in Mount Maunganui are two places you must visit! The interior is hip, quirky and cool! Both establishments are run by people who take pride in their work, which makes your visit even more enjoyable. Pizza is HUGE, delicious and a great deal. Vaudeville has a wide variety of drinks and cocktails you have never heard of before. Every visit is as unforgettable as the previous one. It is no surprise that locals and tourists both call this place their favorite. 10: Wairere Falls
The Wairere Falls, a masterpiece of nature, are an amazing sight. This perfect part of the region is filled with stunning views, beautiful falls and beautiful tracks. The 3.5 hour tramp from Dickey’s Flat to the Kaimai mamaku Forest Park is well worth it. But you’ll still need walking shoes! Enjoy the stunning views of the Waikato Plains, the valley and the waterfalls from the lookouts at the bottom of the falls. In the summer, you can swim in waterholes that are located along the track.
