Asbest-containing products, such as floor tiles, pipe insulation, roofing materials, and cement, were produced in large quantities until 1999, after its dangers were made widely known.
Due to its widespread use from the 1960s until the 1980s there is still the high risk of asbestos-containing material being encountered by people working in certain industries, such as plumbing and construction.
If asbestos is not disturbed, it poses no threat. However, if asbestos is disturbed during renovations or other activities that may disturb asbestos, the asbestos-containing material will have to be removed.
This article follows up on our article from last month about How to Remove Asbestos from Your Property. It will explain how asbestos waste is disposed and destroyed.
Transporting Asbestos
Documentation recently updated by Environment Agency states that hazardous waste must be double-bagged, except when waste is too large to fit in a bag. In this case it should be wrapped securely. Bagged or wrapped waste should be kept in secure containers that can be locked.
- Asbestos skips
After the asbestos is removed by a professional and double-bagged in accordance with approved codes of practices, it’s sealed in a lockable bin to be transported directly and disposed at a licensed disposal site.
Available in a range of sizes depending on the scale of the project, asbestos skips will ensure asbestos-contaminated waste is stored safely and securely before it is disposed of at landfill.
- Transfer station
If you have a small amount of asbestos waste to dispose of, it may be more appropriate to hire the services of a professional company that has a license transfer station. As with skip hire, asbestos wastes must be first removed in accordance with the applicable codes of practice. They should then be double bagged or bundled. For transportation to transfer station, however, the waste is placed in a separate compartment such as a van.
The waste from the sealed container or area of the van is transferred to a skip that has been licensed at the transfer station.
Asbestos Disposal
By hiring the services of an company that specializes in asbestos disposal auckland, you can ensure that all asbestos waste will be disposed of correctly and safely.
You must ensure that the company you choose to transport your waste is a licensed waste carrier. They should also have a permit or licence that proves that the site has the authority to accept the waste. Illegally dumping asbestos can result in a heavy fine or even incarceration.
Asbestos Destroying
Experts have been looking for eco-friendly solutions to waste management in these times of climate concern. As a result, several projects found ways to destroy all traces and traces of hazardous wastes by destroying asbestos in building materials.
The ABCOV(r), for example, uses physical/chemical processes in order to eliminate current and future asbestos liabilities, while the EU funded Amiante project utilizes a reactor to destroy hazardous fibres, with no adverse impact on human or environmental health.
As asbestos waste is not currently used in the UK in this way, the only legal destination for it at the moment is landfill.
