These are the top styling tips I have for every wardrobe.

Many of us have enjoyed the freedom to dress in our most comfortable clothes daily, even though we have been adjusting to working from home for the past year.

Are matching tracksuits suitable for when we return to “real life”? What shoes have we worn to work? Are my pre-lockdown clothes still in style? Do I really need to purchase a new wardrobe? What’s hot? Do I even care?

Fear not if any of this sounds familiar. Our Fashion Editor will share her top styling tips and fashion formulas to transform any wardrobe.

EXPERIMENT COLOURFUL ACCESSORIES

Color can feel intimidating, especially in this age of browns and beiges. However, they can add style to any outfit. Even if you don’t like brightly colored clothing, it’s worth getting some bags and jewelry. These will lift your mood and enhance your appearance.

BANK SOME ALL-BLACK BASICS

However, everyone has those days when they feel completely unmotivated and don’t want to be noticed. To be able to have a few subtle basics that you can count on, like a black maxi and good pair of boots to feel great in, even if you don’t feel the need to #curea #lewk.

Be a smart person with PROPORTIONS

This was a challenge for me as I tend to wear a looser silhouette. Balance is key to avoid looking too tight or drowning under the fabric. It’s easy to compare the top and bottom halves, but you can also see how cinched cuffs/waists/ankles can have a dramatic impact on your overall shape.

CONSIDER VERSATILITY

Another thing I haven’t been great at is thinking of multiple ways to wear a new item. This shirt dress is worn open at the neck with boots in autumn and below the knee with sandals for holiday. It’s layered over a slim-fit roll neck for dinner and unbuttoned from the waist with jeans for casual weekend looks.

INCORPORATE TEXTURES DIFFERENTLY

It’s easy to make an outfit seem more expensive by playing with textures. You can layer sheer outer over more basic staples underneath, add a hint of ribbed knitwear at the neckline and wrists, and even incorporate some sequins when necessary (post-lockdown we imagine).

PLAY WITH THE OUTER LAMINAR

Too often, ‘outerwear has been viewed as functional. But considering that it forms the shell for your look and is the only thing actually look at right now since no one is meeting indoors, I believe it deserves some credit. You can flip your thinking for a moment and wear a basic layer with a bright coat or maxi cardigan.

FRENCH-TUCK ALLTHING

Rethinking how you wear your everyday looks is a great way to update your wardrobe. The French half tuck, also known as the “half tuck”, is an easy way to update any look that feels a bit sticky while still maintaining a sense of ease and nonchalance.

LEARN JEWELLERY FORMULAS

It’s not as difficult as it sounds. A great way to make a timeless, simple look more modern is through the art of jewelry layering. It’s not enough to just put on all your necklaces at once. You need to understand the art of stacking. Three is the best number, and three is the most successful. However, different chain densities are a crucial component. A pendant can be a great addition to your necklace, creating a unique shape that is different from the round chains.

WORK WITH OUR INSECURITIES

Everyone has their insecurities, which are often completely irrational. But it’s much more productive to learn how to work with them than to curse them. You’ll be more creative in your sartorial choices if you do this. My personal favorite trick is layering loose-sleeved T-shirts underneath thin straps or trousers under dresses.

TRY A TOTAL LOOK

You may find color-coordinating difficult and too often revert back to black and white. Try experimenting with ‘tonal looks for a contemporary take on color. While creams, beiges, and khakis work well together, there are many other options. Pair your favorite pale blue top with royal blues, navies, and seafoam green. A look that has a variety of tones instantly feels more polished and elegant.

PLAN AHEAD

A matching nail varnish/outfit combination is a great way to feel pulled together. You’ll look and feel much more professional if your beauty look matches your outfit, whether you are wearing toenails or sandals, or fingernails with a dress, bag, or trouser combination.

SOFTEN BLOCK LOOKS

Wearing a solid color from your shoulders down to your toes can make you feel dense. You can break it up by adding a layer between your outfits and your skin, such as roll-necks, long-sleeved sleeves, or cuffs. This will make the look more wearable than it is you.

Invest in a good coat

If all else fails, investing in a good coat is the best investment in wardrobe design. Belted coats are my preference because they balance the length of long sleeves and shorter lengths. Your weakness could be a great print or luxurious fabric, or a cozy hood. This is your best investment for 2021. It doesn’t seem like we’ll be spending much time indoors.
